The Citrus Treasures of the Çukurova Plain: Adana’s Golden Tradition

In the vast Çukurova Plain, where the fertile alluvial soils of the Seyhan and Ceyhan rivers meet ideal climatic conditions, lies one of Turkey’s most productive citrus-growing regions: the province of Adana. With its millennia-old agricultural heritage, Adana has become a center for premium citrus fruits, supplying markets across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East with its aromatic produce.

A Garden of Eden for Citrus Fruits

“Çukurova is made for citrus cultivation,” says Okan Demirtaş, Chairman of the Adana Citrus Producers Union, as he walks through his expansive orchard. “Our unique geographical location between the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains creates a special microclimate.” The hot, humid summers and mild winters provide ideal growing conditions, while the nutrient-rich alluvial soils of the plain supply the trees with all essential minerals.

The region also benefits from abundant natural water sources, thanks to the Seyhan and Ceyhan rivers, which ensure reliable irrigation even during dry spells. “Water is life—especially for citrus fruits,” Demirtaş emphasizes. “And we have plenty of it here.”

A Story Passed Down Through Generations

Citrus cultivation in Adana goes back generations. “My great-grandfather started growing citrus in the 1920s,” shares Ahmet Yücel, whose 35-hectare orchard is among the oldest in the region. “Back then, we mostly grew local varieties for the domestic market. Today, we export worldwide.”

In many families, knowledge of how to care for these delicate trees is passed down from generation to generation. “There are things you can’t learn from books,” says Yücel as he expertly prunes a young branch. “Knowing the perfect time to cut, how fruits ripen best—this is experience-based knowledge.”

This traditional wisdom doesn’t stop growers from embracing modern technologies. “Tradition is our foundation, but innovation drives us forward,” says Zeynep Karaoğlu, a young agronomist who took over her family’s farm after completing her studies. “Today we use computer-controlled irrigation, soil sensors, and precision fertilization.”

    The Citrus Diversity of Adana

The Adana region is renowned for its impressive variety of citrus fruits:

    • Adana Oranges – A local variety with intense flavor and high juice content

    • Washington Navel Oranges – Large, seedless fruits perfect for fresh consumption

    • Moro Blood Oranges – Distinctive red flesh and a rich, unique flavor

    • Meyer Lemons – Sweeter than typical lemons with a thin peel

    • Fremont Mandarins – Easy to peel, with sweet and aromatic flesh

    • Minneola Tangelos – A mandarin-grapefruit hybrid with a signature shape

“Each variety has its own character and strengths,” explains Prof. Dr. Murat Aksoy of Çukurova University, who collaborates closely with local producers. “The diversity of our offering is a major advantage in international markets.”

    From Orchard to Market

Citrus fruits from Adana are known not only for their exceptional flavor but also for their quality and shelf life. “Our fruits need to withstand long transport routes and still arrive fresh for consumers,” explains Mert Özdemir, Export Manager at Adana Citrus Export Company, one of the region’s largest distributors.

In recent years, the region has made significant investments in post-harvest infrastructure. State-of-the-art packing stations with automated sorting machines, cold storage, and efficient logistics systems enable the fruits to be transported to their target markets in optimal condition.

“From harvest to supermarket shelf, it often takes only 4–6 days,” Özdemir emphasizes. “That’s crucial for freshness and taste.”

    Sustainability as a New Focus

In recent years, Adana’s citrus growers have increasingly focused on sustainability. “We are feeling the direct effects of climate change,” says Mustafa Kiliç, who converted his 20-hectare orchard to organic farming. “Higher temperatures, irregular rainfall—we have to adapt.”

Many farms have modernized their irrigation systems to conserve water and are reducing pesticide use through integrated pest management. The region has seen a rise in GlobalG.A.P. and organic certifications.

“We’ve realized that sustainability and economic success can go hand in hand,” says Dr. Ayşe Yılmaz, head of the regional agricultural advisory service. “Our producers are increasingly aware that eco-friendly practices can also fetch better prices in European markets.”

    Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite favorable conditions, citrus growers in Adana face significant challenges. Rising production costs, climate change, and increasing international competition require ongoing adaptation.

“We can’t compete with labor costs in some other producing countries,” admits Okan Demirtaş. “Our strength lies in quality, reliability, and geographic proximity to key markets.”

To stay competitive, many farms are focusing on specialization and niche products. “We’re experimenting with new varieties that are especially sweet or have intense flavors,” shares Zeynep Karaoğlu. “We’re also investing in innovative packaging and traceability systems.”

    A Region with a Future

Despite all the challenges, Adana’s citrus growers remain optimistic. “We have a unique combination of natural advantages, tradition, and willingness to innovate,” concludes Ahmet Yücel. “That gives us a solid foundation for the years ahead.”

The region plans to further strengthen its position in international markets, especially in the premium segment. “Adana stands for quality and taste,” emphasizes Mert Özdemir. “We want to continue building on that reputation.”

As the sun sets over the endless rows of citrus trees, Ahmet Yücel picks a ripe orange and inhales its aroma. “Each of our fruits holds a piece of our story, our culture, and our passion. That’s what makes Adana’s citrus fruits so special.”
